Saguaro, Carnegia gigantea
Companion plant
Better known as the Giant Saguaro, this is the most iconic cactus of the entire desert southwest. Slow-growing but spectacular when mature, these cacti may take ten years to reach 5 feet tall and more than 50 to reach 20 and begin forming arms. Full lifespan can exceed 200 years. In the near future, expect them to develop sturdy tall stems of a rich green color, with pleated folds lined in clusters of pale yellow spines. Mature plants produce large yellowish blooms that give way when pollinated to reddish edible fruits.Available plants are several-year old seedlings approximately 1-1.5" in height.
